The short and practical answer is that rigid plastics – specifically PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Code 1 and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) Code 2 – are almost universally recyclable across the UK.

They are the easiest materials to sort mechanically using optical scanners and infrared sensors. Consequently, rigid plastics form the core of most commercial dry mixed recycling collections.

2. Flexible Plastics

These flexible plastics can be bent, stretched, and compressed. They include bubble wrap, pallet stretch wrap, carrier bags, shrink wrap, and plastic film used for packaging. This material can technically be recycled, but due to its lightness, it’s problematic for most standard sorting plants.

Flexible plastic materials often become entangled in the rotating drums of sorting machinery, causing stoppages and damage. To recycle flexible plastics efficiently, they should be kept separate from other recyclable materials and stored in the designated containers or sacks specified by your waste collection provider.

Understanding Plastic Recycling Symbols and Codes

The small triangle formed of three chasing arrows printed on plastic packaging is called the Mobius Loop. Inside this loop, you will find a number from 1 to 7. These numbers are plastic recycling codes (specifically known as the Resin Identification Code system), and they tell sorting facilities exactly what type of polymer the packaging is made of.

Many people assume that if a piece of plastic has a Mobius Loop, it is automatically recyclable. This is a common misconception. The symbol simply identifies the resin type; it does not guarantee that your local waste infrastructure can process it.

• PET (Code 1) and HDPE (Code 2) are incredibly stable, valuable, and easy to wash and flake. The market demand for recycled PET and HDPE is high, as major brands face legal and social pressure to use food-grade recycled content in their new packaging.

Why Are Some Plastics More Difficult to Recycle?

Not all plastics can be recycled through standard UK recycling systems. Here’s why:

• LDPE (Code 4): Flexible plastic films can become tangled in sorting equipment. They typically need to be collected separately through dedicated film recycling services.

• PS (Code 6): Polystyrene is lightweight but bulky, making it costly to collect and transport. It is also frequently contaminated with food, limiting recycling opportunities.

• OTHER (Code 7): Includes mixed plastics, multi-layer packaging, bioplastics, and other specialist polymers that cannot be easily separated or processed using standard mechanical recycling systems.

What Plastics Cannot Be Recycled?

While we would love to recycle every piece of plastic that enters our workplaces, the physical reality of waste processing means that certain materials must go into your general mixed waste bins. Putting non-recyclable materials into your recycling bins causes contamination, which can ruin otherwise clean loads of waste.

Here are the primary plastics that cannot be recycled through standard commercial recycling services:

1. Black Plastics

Black food trays and packaging are notorious in the recycling industry. Mechanical sorting facilities use Near-Infrared (NIR) light technology to detect and classify different plastics. NIR light works by bouncing a beam of light off the plastic and measuring the reflected wavelength to determine the polymer type. Because black plastic contains carbon black pigment, it absorbs the infrared light completely. The machine cannot detect any reflection, rendering the black tray “invisible” to the sensors. The system automatically rejects the invisible tray and sends it to the general waste stream.

2. Composite and Multi-Layered Plastics

A classic example of composite packaging is the foil-lined crisp packet or the flexible pet food pouch. These materials are constructed by laminating a layer of metallic foil between two layers of different plastics. While this creates an incredible barrier that keeps food fresh, standard sorting plants cannot separate these bonded materials. Consequently, they cannot be recycled and must go into the general waste bin.

3. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Although polystyrene has a recycling code (Code 6), expanded polystyrene – the bulky white foam used to protect new electronics during transit – is rarely recycled. EPS is made of 98% air. This means that transporting massive, bulky loads of polystyrene to a processing centre is incredibly carbon-intensive and expensive, given the tiny amount of actual plastic polymer recovered. Unless compressed on-site with a specialist industrial compactor, EPS should be disposed of in general mixed waste.

4. Contaminated or Dirty Plastics

A plastic container is only recyclable if it is clean. If your staff throw plastic microwave trays covered in sauce, half-empty bottles of sugary energy drinks, or greasy plastic wrappers into the recycling bin, the food and moisture will leak. This wet, greasy residue ruins clean paper and cardboard in the same bin. Dirty plastic is unusable; food oil degrades the plastic’s chemical bonds during melting, resulting in a weak, unusable recycled product.

Step 4: Floating and Density Separation

The clean flakes are then dumped in water tanks. Through this density sorting technique, different kinds of polymer are screened out, whether they sink or float in the water. For instance, HDPE and PP flakes float to the top, while heavier PET flakes sink to the bottom, delivering materials with more than 99% purity to sorting plants.

Step 5: Extrusion and Pelletising

Dried, clean plastic flakes are mixed and put into an extruder where they are melted at a high temperature and pressed into plastic threads by means of a die plate. The threads are cooled with water, then chopped into small, uniform plastic pellets.

These recycled pellets are the raw material of the future. Plastic manufacturers buy these pellets to blow into new beverage bottles, weave into polyester clothing, manufacture automotive parts, or mould into agricultural drainage pipes.

How Businesses Should Prepare Plastic Waste for Collection

Improving your workplace recycling rates does not require a massive capital investment. It simply requires establishing clear, simple habits. By taking these four operational steps, your team can ensure your plastic waste remains highly recyclable and legally compliant:

1. The “Empty, Rinse, Dry” Protocol

Establish a strict rule in your staff breakout kitchens: rinse before you recycle.

• Empty: Pour out any remaining liquids or sauces down the sink.

• Rinse: Give the plastic container a quick rinse using leftover washing-up water. You don’t need to run it through a commercial dishwasher; a simple shake to remove food debris is perfect.

• Dry: Tap out excess water. Keeping the plastic dry ensures that the paper and cardboard in your dry-mixed recycling bin do not get soaked and ruined.

2. Flatten and Compress

Plastic bottles and milk cartons contain a lot of air. If they are thrown into your outdoor wheelie bins unflattened, they will fill them in a matter of days. Your business will end up paying for frequent collections of half-empty bins containing mostly air.

• Encourage staff to squash plastic bottles flat and screw the caps back on (this traps the bottle in a flattened state).

• Flatten rigid cardboard boxes and nest smaller plastic tubs inside each other.

3. Keep It Loose (No Tied Black Bags)

This is one of the most common recycling mistakes in UK offices. Cleaning teams often collect clean recyclables from office bins in black bin bags, tie them, and throw them into the outdoor recycling wheelie bins.

• The Problem: Mechanical sorting plants operate at high speed. Operatives cannot see inside black bags, and they are legally prohibited from manually ripping them open due to the risk of sharps and hazardous contamination.

• The Result: Tied black bags are immediately pulled off the line and sent straight to general waste or incineration, regardless of how clean the plastics inside are.

In the past, sorting facilities requested that caps be removed because they are made of a different plastic (usually PP, Code 5, or HDPE, Code 2) than the bottle itself (PET, Code 1). Leaving the caps screwed onto flattened bottles prevents them from falling through the sorting machinery meshes and getting lost as litter.
