Lightbulbs and Fluorescent Tubes: Lightbulbs contain metal filaments, plastic bases, and, in the case of fluorescent tubes, toxic mercury vapours. These items are classified as hazardous waste and must be collected separately through secure WEEE disposal channels.

Ceramics, Porcelain, and Pottery: A cup, saucer, bowl, or clay pot will not melt in a glass furnace. In fact, a very small amount of ceramic could potentially ruin a batch of hot glass, affecting the structural properties of the final object.

How Glass Is Recycled: Step-by-Step Recycling Process

Step 1: Collection and Local Weighing

The cleaned, sorted cullet travels to the glass production plant where it’s added to soda ash, sand and limestone, then poured into a high-temperature gas furnace at over 1500C, where it melts to form glass.

Step 7: Moulding and Annealing

The molten glass is fed into automated forming machines. Shears cut the glass into precise, glowing drops called “gobs,” which are dropped into moulds and blown into brand-new bottles and jars. The newly formed containers pass through an annealing lehr – a controlled-cooling oven – that slowly cools the glass to relieve internal stress and prevent cracking.
