Stay Compliant. Avoid Penalties. Simplify Your Waste Management with Us.
The UK government’s Simpler Recycling legislation has fundamentally changed the waste management landscape. Under the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the days of “all-in-one” bins are over.
Since March 2025, your business is legally required to separate key waste streams or pay hefty penalties. The reforms also mean introducing new bins and ensuring staff follow proper waste separation practices.
At Enviro Waste Management, we transform compliance into a competitive advantage. We handle the complexity of Simpler Recycling, so you can focus on what’s vital – running your business.
Simpler Recycling, a UK government reform, aims to simplify recycling across England. Previously, recycling was a postcode lottery with rules varying by council. Meaning, different areas followed different recycling systems.
The new legislation removes this confusion by introducing consistent waste streams, clearer recycling rules nationwide and improved national recycling rates.
Households, offices, restaurants, warehouses, etc. must now source separate –
Non-recyclable waste
Plastics, metals and recyclable packaging
Organic waste from kitchens and prepared or leftover food
Uncontaminated paper materials and packaging
The Benefit – By contacting Enviro Waste Management, you no longer face the council complexities and can reduce your waste costs.
Simpler Recycling applies to most businesses and workplaces across England, with more than 10 employees.
Offices and corporate workplaces
Restaurants, cafés and hospitality venues
Retail shops and shopping centres
Warehouses and logistics companies
Manufacturing and industrial sites
Schools and universities
Healthcare providers and care homes
Property managers and commercial landlords
In short, any organisation that produces waste must comply.
From 31st March 2026, households across England must comply with the same standardised recycling rules.
Simpler Recycling is a legal requirement. The Environment Agency and local authorities monitor compliance and can investigate businesses that fail to correctly separate waste.
To address deliberate non-compliance, the Environment Agency is now charging businesses £118 per hour for regulatory work.
Businesses found non-compliant and with repeated offences may also receive an escalated penalty notice from the Environment Agency.
With the upcoming changes, households will also need to separate food waste and, in some cases, combined food and garden waste from general rubbish.
Since the legislation has introduced clear legal responsibilities for businesses and households regarding recycling, they must either learn the rules or face penalties.
Our team helps businesses and residential property managers implement the right bin systems, waste streams, and collection schedules, ensuring full compliance while reducing contamination and unnecessary disposal costs.
Preparing early is the best way to avoid penalties and operational disruption. We provide a simple, structured process to help businesses become compliant.
Once a customer contacts us, we assess their setup—whether they have bins and know sizes or need help. If clear, everything is done online, including contract, risk assessment, and payment setup. We review bins and request photos to complete checks before collections begin.
If you're unsure about your bin setup, questioning previous requirements, or simply want peace of mind; we’ll carry out a free on-site waste audit. We assess the bins, check if recyclables or food waste is being mixed into General Mixed Waste, and explain the Simpler Recycling rules and its associated penalties. We also look for opportunities to improve your recycling rate.
During the audit, we also highlight the cost benefits of proper waste separation. Food waste is heavy and can cause GMW bins to exceed weight limits, leading to additional charges, while food waste bins do not have any such costs. Separating food waste can therefore reduce costs and allow businesses to downsize their GMW bins.
If the audit takes place on-site, we’ll provide the contract afterwards and set up the direct debit at the same time. We will then supply the appropriate bins and set up a compliant collection system for general waste, recycling, food waste and more, if required.
We ask the site contact to brief their staff on correct waste separation, but for larger sites or key clients we can arrange staff training ourselves to explain what goes in each bin and why; covering compliance, penalties, and cost savings.
After collections begin, we provide full Duty of Care documentation. Customers also receive a monthly report showing waste volumes and costs across each waste stream. This helps identify issues, such as too much waste going into GMW, and allows businesses to correct behaviour internally, reduce contamination, and avoid unnecessary charges.
Previously, recycling rules varied between local councils, often leading to confusion about what could and could not be recycled.
The UK government has introduced simpler Recycling to create a consistent and more effective recycling system across England.
